Day 18
Miles: 90
Destination: West Yellowstone, MT
Today we awoke to the lovely sound of 90’s boy band ballads blaring in the cafeteria of the Eagle Mount Recreation Center. Boarding there was great and most of the guys fell asleep to the classic “Liar Liar.” After a helping of bagel and cereal we hopped on the bikes bound for Yellowstone.
Fortunately the weather conditions were nice this morning, so we were able to avoid the cold damp wakeup Montana. We began the ride traveling through some rolling country hills and then caught Rt. 191 bound for Yellowstone! Today was a steady up hill ride and when you add in a head wind it can get a little tiring. Fortunately, we had many gorgeous canyons and river ways to enjoy along the way. All the guys stopped to take pictures with the “Yellowstone National Park” sign, in addition to many other photo ops. The scenery was amazing; snow capped mountains, flowers of every color, and rock formations captivated everyone throughout the ride. This provided a nice break from the concentration of the pounding in our legs.
Just outside West Yellowstone we all grouped up and double pace lined into our lodging at West Yellowstone High, where we were met by the media. After that we had our first “team car wash” all the guys joined together to scrub down the vans and keep us looking good on the road. Our team has grown so close already and every team event is full of laughs, even when we’re just cleaning. The team finished the evening by heading out on the town and grabbing some pizzas and of course ice cream, which has become a tradition.
