Leaving Camp
“Leaving Camp”
Date : 6/16/2009
Day: 11
Miles: 50
Destination: Kellogg, ID
We had a wonderful 7:00 AM late wake-up at Camp Swayolaken, and were greeted with a wonderful pancake breakfast after we made our way down to the dining hall. A special thanks to Miss Casey and the rest of the camp staff for showing us off as we departed back to Highway 95 and on our way to Kellogg, ID. The first third of our 80 mile day was a stiff up-hill climb through a fairly strong head-wind. We departed the highway and were directed by the crew to follow a “Rails to Trails” path that would take us directly to Kellogg. Turns out “Rails to Trails” is a federal program that turns un-used railroad routes into several miles of biking, running, and walking paths. The route ran parallel to the Cour De’ Leane River and offered us a very scenic view the whole length. Not long after lunch a couple of pace lines spotted a moose not far from the path, it was exciting to see such a large animal up close. There is a general consensus through our group that this route was the most beautiful and relaxing day of biking we’ve had as of yet. We relaxed after the ride at the Kellogg High School and ate great sandwiches made for us by Camp Swayolaken. Tomorrow is a century day (100 miles) with two peaks at 4000 ft and 3000 ft. I think everyone will be in bed early tonight as we have a 5:00 am wake-up.
